Hi from the UK. Picked up at the boot sale (flea market) this weekend. Does this mortice chisel have a specific name ? I wouldnt call it a "Swans Neck" more like "Little Foot" what do you think ? Maker is Thomas Beall of Tenterden Kent.

Hello, Ric. I think it is used for cleaning out deep mortises, such as the mortise for a lock case on a door. That is a cool looking tool!!!  I like the foot shaped end. Could be for more leverage, or the owner, or, maker's , special touch. Regards, Lou

You might say I have a tool collecting problem....

Hi Ric, to expand a little on what Lou said they are generally called a 'lock mortise chisel' and used as he said. Yours is the first I've seen that was one piece. Ours were usually made in two pieces, having a socket chisel portion and a wood handle.

Thanks for your replies - I think this is a makers "special" possibly

Northwoods

That "heel" would give more leverage for cleaning out a deep cut.

Plus, it is just a little bit sexy...
