I just found this, no, not in the corner of my garage.  Actually stumbled over it in a dimly lit corner of an antique mall.  Price was right or it would not have followed me home.  No rust, no damage apparent.  Never been used to hold up an engine block, but it is sturdy enough to do so.  Look like its been sitting on a bench with the lid open for decades.  Appearance is decieving as about 85% of the original paint looks good and photographs bad.  Sherman Klove on the diamond.  Two drawers, with tool tote, latches even work and its heavy, 30lbs. empty.  Measures 22inches x 10 inches.  Going to get after it with some soap, should it get new crackle paint?  Or leave it alone?

Let's see how it looks with minimal cleaning before trying new paint.

Scrub it down with soap and water.
Try Galoot mix on it. Linseed/wax/turps (or the solvent of your choice like paint thinner).

Give it a day to dry and buff it out. See how it looks then.

If you still don't like it? Still too battered and stained?
you have strip all traces of wax back off.
But you will have to prep it for paint regardless, and the wax will go then anyway.

Your old tool box looks pretty nice as it is I think, nice work.

I recently found one like this in an old shed on my sons place.  It's very rusted, as a matter of fact the lid must have been open for years because the hinge is rusted tight.  I think in time I'll get it to move though but it's going to need some paint. Any ideas out there?  These old SKs had a green crackle paint on them.  Probably can't get it any more though.

Look around the forum, I believe someone called it hammer-tone paint?  Is still available in some colors, I hear.  I just tried some Kroil rust penetrant for the first time, lets say I am a believer in the stuff.

I've used Hammerite paint many times, it hides a lot of blemishes. I may use that on the old box and yes Kroil is amazing stuff, I used it a lot on a tractor I restored a few years ago.

Eastwood has wrinkle paint,

(Old cars had wrinkle painted things in  them also...)

Unfortunatly, they only seem to have black, looking around, everyone else seems to just have black. I dunno if you could spray something wrinkled black to get the texture and then overspray it a color or not....
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

This is the touch-up paint for kennedy boxes.  It would be nice to know if they make the s-k green for spraying the older boxes!
