Assorted goodies, Mostly Wrenches
« on: March 20, 2012, 07:18:13 PM »
I had to travel yesterday so I stopped in a pawn shop I go to when I go to Bozeman, Mt. I got these for less than the gas it cost me to drive 200 miles to get there.
The top one is a Millers Falls I got at the local Gun and Antique show over the weekend. The middle one is my first (I think) Plomb screwdriver and the bottom one is Blue Point.

International Harvester 1/2", no other members of the family were there ... I checked.

A Huot bit box made for Lawson Products:

Lots of wrenches, you can't have too many old Craftsmans, I don't care what they say.

And I can't resist a Mossberg just about anything in good shape; that one is a 676-A

some close ups:

All in all, a good pawn shop visit. That handsome knurled big punch looking thing is a K-D #416 Ramo-Matic zerk fitting tool for knocking the gunk off of zerks and filling them with grease in case you (like me) did not know.
Some of the wrenches, like the "TuHex" for Fords, the small round dbe marked "x chrome vanadium steel 10" and the one marked "ATD 1166" I don't recognize or have not seen before.

Wow, you sound quite a stash of goodies in one place...

TuHex was Bonney's play on words brand for their first try at 'economy tools' (mid-late 1930's), the Zenel era, before Bon-E-Con, take two (Tu) hex (6 point) box wrenches overlaid and you get 6+6=12 point.....

The fleet wrench with the inset fractions is interesting also....
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

Nice finds

who gave that right to me.

I check that store every time I get to that town. I am always amazed at what I find there. It is a very large second hand / pawn store and the tools just seem to be something they take in but don't really have much interest in.

They had a very nice group of nearly unused Japan Truecraft combos and box ends in the larger sizes but they were all priced in the double digits each! I don't know what they thought they were on to but I had to pass them up. There was also a fairly complete set of old style raised beam double open end SK wrenches in the larger sae sizes, but they had the owners name engraved on them so, I decided to pass them up but have since regretted it as I'm pretty sure I could have gotten them for less than $1 each. I didn't know that until after I had made my purchase though. Oh well, I'll check back next time I'm over that way and see what's new and maybe the Truecrafts will be on sale.
Those old tools do make for great forum pictures though, don't they? Glad you enjoyed them and thanks for noticing.

P.S. The Kraeuter pliers over on another discussion reminded me that I had also gotten a small Kraeuter 20181 'diagonal cutters' in the same group but had them out to show them off and they missed the group picture. I don't know when Kraeuter stopped making tools and AA doesn't seem to say. This model has a much newer look than anything shown on AA and the number doesn't seem to jive with anything they show there. Google was no help. I think there is much more to the Kraeuter story, it's just not so easy to find. Apparently there is/was an 'industrial' line of tools which is not mentioned on AA at all. Don't get me wrong, I love and respect the work of AA ... just sayin' there's always more, more, more.

Anyway, since we're on the subject, here they are:

I like that IH wrench.  I've seen several more modern IH marked sockets of late and didn't realize prior IH even branded tools outside those fitted on their machinery.  An  interesting story there I wasn't aware of.  When first learning of them I thought they were fairly uncommon but I've since been seeing them at about every turn....guess I just didn't have my eye turned towards them before now.

I'd like to call myself collecting IH tools someday.

I suspect those IH branded tools that you see commonly are of the 'offshore' variety. Kind of like the John Deere situation. The USA versions are less common and usually pretty pricey when you do find them. Are the ones you're seeing marked USA? If so, I know there are lots of IH and JD collectors that want them. It isn't always a sure thing though. I put 3 USA John Deere wrenches on eBay a short while back and had no idea what they would go for. I did think they would do well, as wrenches go. The large 15/16" went up to around $40 while the 2 smaller metric ones of the same vintage, probably the same set, had lots of looks but only 1 bid each and sold for 99 cents each. Go figure. On one hand you could say there isn't any demand for metric. If you read elsewhere though, you can see discussions where it is said that nearly everything is metric and that sae will fade away eventually. Then again, probably not much metric on old John Deeres, but ..... and on and on and on. That's what I like about it. There is almost always a surprise or unexpected tidbit around every corner.

Most of the IH sockets I've seen are larger 3/4" drive - now in my garage - marked USA - origin "shop".

Ah, well, I didn't know you were referring to nuggets from your very own gold mine there. I should have guessed.

You have no idea how many pounds of scrap and trash and how many barrels of oil I had to "sift" through for those nuggets.  Now emotion prevents me from profiting from said nuggets and I must spend more money to build more room to display nuggets found + nuggets purchased :)

But seriously, it seems this part of the country does have a good bit of IH, John Deere, Hornet, and other off branded tools floating around.  I've seen no evidence of it being late production or stock.  This part of the world was, and is still to some degree, very much a "I don't want the devil (internet) in my house", "I do business HERE, not in Dallas", "go to bob's and get X", "Bob, I'm not buying that crap not made in the US", "get that China made crap out of here", "I've done business there all my life" kind of area.  Not to mention the areas surges financially with oil prices where everybody buys everything top quality new this decade, and then leaves it in the service truck for the next decade because bottom fell out.
