As you can see, these are replacement bolt dies in 1/4 and 3/8. They look unused to me, albeit rusty on the surface. The teeth look and feel pretty sharp. What are these type used for exactly, and how. Educate me, folks. I have no clue.

First three photos are of the 1/4 inch ones, I only took one of the 3/8 as they are marked and made the same as the 1/4 dies.

Oh drat! Wrong pattern for me.
I guess Toledo made more than one style of pipe die insert cutters.

See the cutters exposed on the 3/4" die in the handle??
Its the only one facing up, the other are facing the side with the pipe guide bushing showing.
But they are there just the same.
This is what they were for.

They thread pipe, and can be removed for sharpening or replacement.

Except mine have a small projection hanging down, instead of the slot yours has.

Ok, now I get it. Replaceable inserts versus cutting edges made into the die like regular tap/die sets.

Makes sense, as pipe threading would be repetitive and hard on the cutting face.

Heelspur spoke up first for them, now he has to come up with some trade fodder...he he he!!!

Note that the ones in the boxes are *bolt* dies, not pipe dies, they will have a different profile. Good for threading rod ..:)
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.
