Long reach cement joiner that is missing the long handle?  I would imagine a 6' tall man holding it from afar would require some degree of curvature.

Oily is right.  The curve is to keep it from digging into the wet concrete as it's drawn across a freshly poured slab.

As an old cement finisher, that thing is awesome! I would use that today if I was pouring sidewalk. I've seen <kinda> similar, but most always brass. Brass tools are miserable to finish with, IMO.
