I know its used to spread something but what? and whats its name?

This is for spreading external snap rings.  The kind that have points on the ends, not the ones with holes.   Used in transmissions, transfer cases,   got one in my tool box.

I agree with John. Used them on many transmissions, but seem to be early manufacture.
