the "Overland"
« on: January 07, 2013, 08:41:54 PM »
This came out of my stash, sort of rusty and was I surprised when the name came to light.  Measures about 6 inches long.  From an Overland auto tool kit?   Might be as early as pre1912,  when Willys bought out Overland.   My thought on it is a water pump adjuster tool?  Any ideas?

john k,

The smaller end of that wrench looks like a small hook spanner... it also looks like a bottle cap lifter.  That's what I would use it for.  "Oh Mabel, Black Label, it's the finest quality beer!"  (TV beer commercial from the mid 1950's, Ft Wayne In; still runs  thru my head every now and then).

Overland!  Here is a photo of my maternal grandfather at the Overland shop in Houston, Texas in 1916. Second from right in the overalls.

I like that one, pretty clear pic for being taken inside.   I notice they have flow through ventilation looking at the siding on the far wall.   Now if they had only taken a pic of the work bench and tool board.   When my grandfather was young, there weren't many cameras around.   Papaw that pic always been in the family?

Yes. That one would have been taken by someone else, but my grandfather and uncle both were avid photographers. Both did some photo work with glass negatives!
I have a bunch of digitized photos they did.
For example, this one was taken by Grandpa. The boy on the right was my Uncle Rolland.

In the past several years, we have collected all the family photos we could from around the country, and a cousin in Philadelphia digitized them. I have a disc with 1100 photos and another with hundreds of documents and family history writings dating back to early America. We also have documentation tracing that part of the family back to the Madeira Islands, which some of our forebears owned before being run out since they were Protestants. They scattered to Alsace Lorraine, Switzerland, and Holland before coming to America.
