The main body is brass, the pointed end that screws in and out is steel, the blunt end is light colored, nonmagnetic metal with a hole thru the center. It looks old, has no marks and I have no idea how I got it.

well to me it looks like it may have come off a machine or it's a set up tool for a machine. It looks like it could clamp the a shaft , maybe hold that shaft so another part could be attached or changed.
A bunch of pics (5000+) of tools and projects in our shoppe

I think it is a small press. Or it could be a holder, but that square drive.......

Whatever it may be exactly notwithstanding, it definitely is very cool.  I have lots of little things I think are cool.  Eventually I find out what they are used for.

OK here is a guess... I have a dim recollection such a fitting attached to some sort of pressure vessel like a gas cylinder. The non-metallic end seals the joint, the screw clamps the fitting tight to the cylinder neck... maybe ???

In that case, it would be somewhat similar to the way the modern regs are attached to the oxy tanks that people use to breathe.

I seen something similar looking on the guy-wire used to correct some telephone poles alignment. Might be something like that? For putting tension into cable?

I think you are thinking turnbuckle...
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

Charles Garrett

It is like one said a attachment for hooking to a pressure source as in hooking a regulator to a breathing O2 cyl.
