Looks like whatever was on the wrench, maybe grease, reacted to the acid forming that crud.

A place I worked at once upon a time had a grease trap fed from the food service sink. I watched when the maintenance man cleaned it out. The crap in there looked a lot like that mess.

I remember the boss called him because the usual dose of acid-based drain cleaner didn't breech the clog to allow drainage of the water.

I wouldn't be surprised if the wrench comes out of that in 'good' condition.  I forgot and left a 1918 Walden speeder lug wrench in vinegar while we spent the winter in Florida.  All the liquid had evaported and it had about an inch of that foam crusted on it and it cleaned off.  I gave it another vinegar bath for about an hour and took some 00 steel wool to it and it came out pretty nice.

AMEN to that Statement!!!! A Commercial food service grease trap usually has a 1, to 2 foot crust on top, when it needs an evacuation, and looks just like the wrench shown! And the Stink makes a Septic tank smell like a bed of Roses! I speakith from experience! I left a Cresent adjustable in vinegar for about a month once, and the steel ate away, and turned black. It took a full day on the wire wheel and sander, then a dip in the rubberized tool coating to save it, as a user. I hope you can save what is left of yours!

That thing is scary looking, I can attest to long tem vinegar bath issues I had a nice little pocket 6" rule with a case. It was rusty and I gave it a bath and promtly forgot about it. About 3 weeks later I pulled it out and threw it away it was about as thick as tin foil.
