IDed one of the mystery pipe wrenches...
« on: September 14, 2011, 01:01:17 PM »
One of the no name pipe wrenches from last week tuns out to be a Winchester(same logo as the rifle co.) with a patent date of 1922 and a stamped in 1033 at the base of the jaw.  14" length if that's important.  Couldn't find it on AA, so does anyone here know of such a beast??  Would send a photo if needed.

TIA

Well, I'd like to see a picture ... why not?
There are lots of 'Winchester' tools but I'm not sure there is a consensus on who the maker(s) might be.

The ebay folks must think they're valuable, but two of the three listed have wood handles and this one doesn't.  The 8"er they want mega bucks for.  Anyway, I'll get off my lazy butt and take a picture or two.  Really nice condition if it's really that old.

Photos, please:

...and yes, that's an Indestro hex drive kit with the Pipe Wrench.  Never seen one with the 1/4" tray attached to the bigger tray like this.  I was able to salvage  most of the Indestro logo on the clamp.  Have three others in various states of dis organization, including one with hex drive metric sockets.

Thanks for the pictures. Have you tried to research the origin of any Winchester tools? I have seen Winchester screwdrivers in nice condition and they are special. A set in nice condition will set you back quite a ways though I don't remember exactly how much. Hundreds anyway.

Interesting, the wrench has a distinctive feature, the folded under piece on the jaw behind the screw to keep the head aligned. The patent (1409672) is assigned to winchester repeating arms, so perhaps they in fact did make this wrench....(datamp seems to think this as well)

Oddly, the only other thing that shows up for the Inventor is a patent for a mechanical voting machine...

(The patent pictture distinctly shows a metal handle....nice find)
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

They must have manufactured some, and put the name on a whole lot of others. A good date guess for that wrench would fall somewhere after world war one and 1931 when the company when bankrupt and quit making tools. (I'm no expert, just did a little quick research)

Guess it's a good thing that I buffed off the funk and found the logo.  It was headed for the  $3 bin for WLGS sale.  It is in great condition.  I'd be tempted to go back to the house and ask the guy if he knew any more about it, but I think he was selling off a relative's tool stash and just wanted the stuff gone and likely had no tool knowledge(or else he wouldn't have let it all go that cheap).  If noting else, if it was bought locally, i would wonder which store sold it.  Prolly the sme one that had PAPaw's Crescent Display!!  Honest, I was waiting to offer him $100 for all that and hoping he'd take it.  When he said $50, my poker face was a tad compromised, but just for a blink....

Thanks for  the info guys, I may be keeping this one.  BTW, I found a Winchester 2 D cell flashlight a couple years ago at an auction for like $2.  The lens cap and the other end are copper colored and shaped like a bullet.  They must've been in a lot of marketing areas to sell their firearms.

Most Winchester collectors insist that Winchester made all their tools themselves, but I don't believe it. I have no proof to back up my belief, just see way too many similarities to other makers' tools and designs.
