I know I've seen these before, and should recognize them, but their identiy eludes me for the moment. Maybe three, four inches long.

Thanks for hint to look at harness, which I should have thought of but didn't.  I think these are hame clips, 3/8" hame clips to be exact. (Examples below from hardware catalogs around the turn of the century.)
