What in tarnation is this thing?
« on: August 23, 2015, 09:56:08 AM »
I've been scratching my head over this one.

What is it? What was it used for? Is it home-made or factory-made?

There are no visible maker marks.

Any help will be much appreciated!

Certainly looks like a nail or tack puller, but I haven't seen one like it.

Well before there was steam punk there was a "primitive punk" where people took broken stuff welded it to other broken stuff.  Then they sat back and laughed!  How long you think it will take for the younger generation to figure this one out......

Thanks for the replies.

I found this in a box of miscellaneous tools... from plumbing to carpentry to ranching. A 93 year old family member, who has a pretty good memory and has done about every type of labor we can think of and some we can't, just smiled and shook his head when I showed it to him. I asked him if he remembered anyone ever using this or something like it. He said nope, but that somebody used it a lot so it must have worked for them for whatever it was they were doing.

I reckon so.

The claw *could* hold a rivet or a nail against that angled part of the head so you could  place it right, and then tap it into place.

That would save your fingers, & the angle keeps your hand away from the work. looks like the top edge is mushroomed more..

Donald_wa is on the right track I believe...

As per the angle of both the "claw" and hammer portion, it very well could be used for nailing crates together... Or for making coffins...

The fact that the handle is formed with a thinned "spring" section to facilitate holding a tack or nail in the claw would lead to believe that the intended function is ... hold a tack and start the tack with a light stroke, then release from the claw, turn over and set the tack with the conventional shaped hammer head.... or at least that's how I would use that tool.

That's the only thing I can think of too.
