That is what they are- hog ring pliers.

Yep, I know. The question was whether the types of hog-ring plier
are well enough defined that the one can safely be described as a
"Hill's pattern" h.r.p. and the other a "Wolverine" h.r.p.  The pliers
themselves, as often, are unmarked.

OK. I agree that most we find are unmarked, but maybe close inspection comparing a found set with those pictures will help decide. I bet there are many more patterns out there that are so similar that we can't differentiate.

 I do not collect hog ring pliers. I do however accumulate hog ring pliers. I do not recall buying any hog ring pliers but they often are sold with other items. These 49 pair contain duplicates and I have not attempted to identify maker. A few have cast ID such as Hills but most do not. Since I have them off the pegboard they are destined to live in a dark little box in a dark corner of one of my storage areas. Didn't notice anything of particular interest but I really didn't inspect them.

1891 Hibbard, Spencer & Bartlett catalog ( https://books.google.com/books?id=STs8AQAAMAAJ ) has two pages of hog ring pliers & matching rings  ( pg. 496-497 )   I'll make sure the patents are all in DATAMP so those with accumulations can sort them by type if they chose.
I do not have a copy of Onie Sims' book "HOG CONTROL" which I'm sure would answer all our hog ring pliers questions.

JimWrench, that is a frightening accumulation of hog-ring pliers. Even
more frightening if I were a hog. It looks like just the sort of thing my wife
warns me about.
