Button Fastener tool?
« on: September 10, 2015, 07:23:10 PM »
Hello,

Today I picked up what the internet tells me is a button fastening tool, marked BX1 126 with a Swastika after it.  I have no idea what possessed me to buy it... I didn't even get a good deal on it... It's clearly NOT WWII German, I know many companies used the swastika before the 40's.

But I digress.... what does it do? o.o What kind of buttons does it fasten? How does it work? o.o Any input would be welcome, thanks!

I know that some place in my shop I have one of these and have had it for many years with out a clue as to what it was for. I went and had quick look for mine to see what kind of markings are on it  but I can't seem to find it. I'll be watching your post to see if any body can give you some more info and maybe some history . I doubt that mine has a swastika on it, that's something that I would remember. Thanks for the post.

Made by Buffum Tool Co of Louisiana,Mo Not shown in my Buffum pamphlet (Tools of Louisiana,Mo) but Buffum made all kinds of tools. Other handle may be marked 127 instead of 126. Do not know exact usage.

I have a pair also.  I can't remember if they're marked or not.  They were used to put the staples in shoe buttons.  I have also seen a pair marked USMC(United Shoe Machinery Co.), not the Marines.

These types of tools were generally used for shoe fastening hardware -- buttons, hooks, eyelets, etc.  Think of a vintage pair of women's or children's shoes with a bazillion buttons or hooks.  This type of tool was used to speed that job up.

( https://www.flickr.com/photos/mvwcnews/21286968746 ) is a scan of  1908 SEARS, ROEBUCK catalog listing for SAMPSON SEAM FASTENER (a shoe repair tool that used specialty staples to hold seams together )  In the days before artificial fibers like nylon, etc. the threads that held shoes together would wear or decay long before the leather wore out.

Here's a few patent images that should help explain what it does

Those are some pretty neat links/inages, thanks n.n

I have an acquaintance who makes shoes... I'll probably give it to her if she can use it.
