Maybe a tube holder? spring loaded inside a tube while you heat it, solder, acid wash, etc...

I sent a photo and link to Rob Hartmann of the "What Is It?" blog.  He doesn't know what it is but thanked me for the info.  Maybe he'll post it on the blog.
