Help with Star pliers/wrench please
« on: December 20, 2015, 05:42:07 PM »
It took some serious work, but I was lucky enough to get this little honey last summer. But now I wonder what I got?? I'm pretty sure I've seen pictures of it before, but I'll be danged if I can remember where? Any info about the tool or the Star company would be appreciated.

8-1/2" long, looks to be malleable iron. Some traces of red paint left in the corners.

My friends call me Bob. My wife calls me a lot worse.

Wow. That's quite the contraption but I like it.

I've seen the double open end adjustable like that but I think that is the first adjustable and plier combination I have seen. Nice find and it is a keeper in my book.

will have to check to see if it was in any past MVWC newsletters.

Stan may remember if it was. seeing as it was in his Dad's book.

In 1898 the King, Buckeye and Star malleable wrenches were all made by U. S. Mfg. Co. of Canton, Ohio. There are two sizes of the King and maybe the Star.

Strangely, it was a piece of junk when it was made, but it is sort of interesting now.

Thanks for the info Bus!

Turnnut, I picked it up in southern Michigan. Not sure where all it might have been before that.

Stan's memory is leaky as a colander; the STAR (2 sizes), KING (2 sizes)  & "B / BELMONT / BUCKEYE " malleables all were shown on pgs. 21-22 of the June 2005 MVWC Newsletter -  Dan Gaier had shown them at the 2005 Spring meeting.

I found this 2005 photo of Dan's display while browsing the MVWC facebook pages. A very impressive grouping he has there!!
