What's this wood handled tool

not smooth on the inside, no detail other than a few ribs
no wax residue on mine. mine are cast iron so could it be a foundry mark?  one's I've seen are usually numbered and have good detail.  Mine show no signs of being hit with a hammer or mallet to mark something like leather.
To me they look like they maybe some type of holder? wax holds the "part" to the holder?
Glad someone else has one so I know they are not a local thing!

I'm just throwing this out there, but....... Could they have something to do with the decorative tacks used to nail down upholstery ? Perhaps a tool to imprint the pattern into a brass tack ?

that was one thing I thought of but?  would they not be hammered in?
thought maybe decorative buttons for leather but haven't done much leather work and haven't seen them in interenet searches for leather tools.

Gimp tacks (official name) leave the factory with the fancy head.  The strip of fabric or upholstery material they hold on to hide the tacks holding the fabric on is called Gimp.

Proper driving of gimp tacks is done with a rubber or rubber faced hammer.

I know larger gesso molds are made of a hard wood.  Could it be a small gesso mold?  I have had those before and they have showed up here in the whatsit section, but I cannot remember if there was ever a concensus.
