Wood Handled Tool & Openers?
« on: May 01, 2016, 03:20:07 PM »
Hello, I picked these up yesterday. The wood handled tool is approx. 43-1/2" long, 20" from the business end to the top of the strap that wraps around the handle, and the blade? is 2-1/8" wide x 10" to the ferrule. The  3 small pieces in the last pic are all the same, oil can openers? Thanks, Lou

The wood handled one looks like a spade that was cut down. Perhaps for a cable/conduit trench or even an electronic leash wire.

I have one somewhat like your top one,

are those foot pegs on it ?     mine is with pegs and I use it to cut into very small roots,  the blade is on the thick side.

I have a couple of those without handles.  I thought maybe they were clapboard slicks.  The "foot pegs" would give you more even pressure on the board when you broke it off the center hub of the sawn log.

Kind of remindes me of a home made tree planting spade.

Hello, Blackoak. You got me looking in the right direction. I believe you are right, this may have been used for planting seedlings, the foot pegs may not be original. Similar all steel tools still being sold today. Thanks, Lou

Hi Lou,  I guess you are resizing your photos before posting them?  They are smaller than necessary.  Try 600 by 400 pixels.  This is well within the limit for web posting and it will show up better here on ToolTalk.

I am guessing the can openers are for paint cans and that maybe the sliding part holds the lid for lifting off?

Hello, Al. Thanks for the info . My camera has 3 options, 320 x 240, which you are viewing, 1600 x 1200 which I know is too big, and 640 x 480 is the middle setting. I will give that one a try. Now, to find a paint can!! Thanks, Lou
