Heaviest, and bluntest axe I've ever seen...
« on: November 06, 2016, 07:10:02 AM »
Okay, it's clearly NOT an axe... but it IS mounted on an axe handle, and it could almost be mistaken for an axe from a side view... but it weighs 23lbs, and I have no idea what it is. Someone posted asking about it on one of my blacksmith groups I follow on FB, and I was struck curious, and figured I'd let you all have a crack at it!

Any ideas?

If one was swinging a 23 pound head, I would think they would want more than an axe handle...

It looks like it would be good for pounding a big ole stake into the ground.

But for the weight, it could be a tamper.

It appears that the ax handle has been cut down to fit the eye of the weight. My guess is the ax handle isn't what originally was in the eye of the block of metal.

I was wondering about that myself... Granted, when I fit hammer heads onto handles they often look like that, so that's not a given... but it could very well be a piece of some large machine that happened to have an axe-handle-shaped hole in it that someone decided to handle for.... some reason...

But, I have no clue :P And knew that someone on here might be wizardly enough to recognize it.

It's for assayers to grind ore samples, you are missing the iron trough

So, basically, half of a giant mortar and pestle.  Get yourself the other half, and surprise your sweetie for her birthday - great for crushing herbs, too!
