How many unknown items do the members own?
« on: December 23, 2016, 10:11:25 PM »
There are auto wrenches, farm machinery tools, then we get into items from the printing industry, factory specialty things,  cobbler and cooper and harness maker tools.  Foundry, and aircraft, and it goes on.  So how many things are hid away that are clearly tools, but no one has ever found a use for?  I have at least 3.

Not so much tools, as random machine parts. There's only one tool I can think of right now, it's some sort of strange socket.

I have a few, but this one is one that has stumped a bunch of folks here and elsewhere. I believe it is a farrier's hoof pick and frog cutter, but have no proof of that yet.

From the side, the shape of the scales almost looks Smith.
What a puzzle.

We discussed it at length in the past. Before the 2011 crash, and again here- http://www.papawswrench.com/vboard/index.php?topic=15850.msg99518#msg99518

It's a carrying handle. Something like this, but much older.

Before moving I had a bunch of random parts an several tools. If it was cool I kept it.

Now I don't have many unknown pieces of junk. I have several I have to research but I know what they are.
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

I've posted a couple of times about this old combination plier tool, but (so far) nobody seems to know what it was made for:

This is different.  Looks to me like some type of riveter, fastener installer.  The pin is a spring loaded plunger?  Which  will squeeze against the stationary jaw.   Then the plier jaws would be used to finish flattening the fastener.   The holes in the handles may have held a big hair pin spring to keep them open, what it looks like to me.

How wide is the handle part?  How many fingers can you get around the handle?  With the hooks on one side, looks more like something for grabbing and pulling.

Is the inside vertical edge of the rusted metal flat or sharpened?

The fact that the metal parts are screwed onto the handle may be a clue.  That would appear to be that they are changeable VS being riveted if not.

Hello, catch22. Yes, both edges, curved & straight, are sharp. And I agree, they are probably attached with screws so worn cutting edges could be easily replaced, or sharpened. Still a mystery!!!  Regards, Lou

Ok, well that helps.  I am thinking it is some type of carving tool.  Not sure if it is wood, clay, ice or even something for the kitchen  .  I have a spoon carving knife that has a blade that looks like that, but it is a single blade.   It looks from the picture that there is a slight bend in the tool so the one blade is a bit higher.  Is that correct or just the picture.
