GODZILLA size round saw blade.
« on: February 08, 2017, 07:56:15 PM »
So i went to the Habitat Restore to day and bought a large round saw blade. It is 20 inches across and has a 5-1/2 inch center hole with notches in it. Carbide tipped with 34 teeth and except for some very minor rust, it appears new. I am still looking for a makers mark. I did a quick search and only found a picture of a used one for sale, but no information about it. i wish it had a mandrel with it so i could make a stand to cut firewood. I will try to post a picture later as my picture person is not here at the moment. I may sell it, hang it on the wall, cut wood with it, make knife blades out of it or mount it on a pendulum in my basement and chop up ------ with it. Any ideas as to it's origin / what it fits.

Could it be from a concrete saw?   The gas powered ones I have observed have a blade about that size.

Edger saws in some sawmills use blades like this.

I edited to say "some" sawmills use blades like this.

The rough cut saw mills I have been around use a round blade 40 inches or more in diameter.  With removable teeth, replaceable type.  I suppose a 20 inch blade could be used to produce finished lumber?

If yours looks like the one show I would say it's a edger saw blade. Blade diameter is related to what thickness your sawing, if your in a typical North American dimension sawmill the two common edgers are gang edgers and board edgers. the gang edgers are behind your primary breakdown machine which is usually a chipping style canter.a head rig or in older mills a scraggs saw or some thing similar. The wood leaves these machines in a square or rectangular cant and depending on the size of the cant it will go to a bandmill or a gang edger. The gang edger in a typical mill will have saws big enough to cut a 10" or 12" cant so could be up to 30"or more. The boards that do not have 2 good edges then go to a board edger to be cut down to a size that gives them good edges and these saws generally only cut 1 3/4" or so thick material so a typical saw blade is around the 30" dia range.
I'm not sure what part of the country your in but up here in Canada Simmons is a big supplier of saws etc to the mills, try them if your looking for carbide tips. If I remember correctly they were silver soldered on. The ones shown are to suit a splined arbour which is typical for most edgers these days. I been retired from the sawmill industry for going on 9 years so some of what I've said may be out dated.

It looks like the ones in the picture jdjax posted. I was hoping to find out the cost so i can decide what to do with it. Sell it, hang it up on the wall, make knives out of it, make a mandrel and mount it on a frame to cut wood or ?

Thank you all for your replies.

I found that out when i did a google search. I had trouble navigating that site. I will try again. I even tried Simonds Canada with no luck. I need to clean the blade and maybe i can find a makers mark and part number. Thank you all for your comments and help.

I googled Simonds International and it came right up.

if you read their history, it is an old company  (1832)  in Fitzburg, Massachusetts.

on the edger saw blades, they show the ones with the (what I call) serrated ID hole.

?? I think they also bought out Heller, the file makers. ??
