A sliding sleeve would bringing the forked ends together and secure, allowing the prongs to be snapped into the inside of something and then released for removal?  But what?

Another mystery solved.

I see there is a company selling these online for just $15 a set btw. The antique guy may be gouging, lol. Unless of course new = lesser quality.
