Why is it?

It's a abco 1 7/8" leather or gasket punch, but why would someone weld 12-15" extension to it?  It looks like it has been used a bit.
So what is it sitting on? not a table top..... old too!

Branding iron from the Little O ranch. Giddy up pardner. A few years ago I saw several branding irons for sale in a antique shop. One of the irons had a alligator wrench welded on the burning end.
