Saturday's Accidental Finds
« on: November 06, 2011, 04:26:51 PM »
Yesterday, my wife and I went out to jumble shops in the area to look for small picture frames. She's an artist, and re-cycles found frames to frame her work for sale.  In the course of looking I found these two wrenches: a 4-inch Snail Brand (7/16 AF) and an old Mack Truck Williams 81 A wrench. At a buck each, they were cheap enough.

Wrenchmensch,

There is just something about S-wrenches that is so elegant.

The Williams/Mack 81A is a beauty.

I like Mack wrenches too. I had a 1925 AC at one time. I believe that is the era of the wrenches.

1. Williams  Mack 45
2. Williams Mack 41
3. Williams Mack 37
4. Williams Mack 33
5. Mack logo only. The triangle B is Billings?
S wrench is Williams Mack 81A

    Mack wrenches found so far

Shown below are the Mack wrenches I have collected so far, including this morning's finds.  I don't remember seeing any straight DOE Mack wrenches.  Something to look forward to!

4 3/8" Wakefield No. 5 wrench, stamped "MACK".
11" Monkey wrench, stamped Mack, made by Fairmount, Cleveland
    6 1/4" 75 Mack S-wrench (Williams)
    8 1/4" 79S Mack (small logo) S-wrench (Williams)
    8 1/4" 79S Mack (large logo) S-wrench (Williams)
    9 1/4" 81A Mack S-wrench (Williams)
    10 3/8" 83A Mack S-wrench (Williams)
    10 3/8" 83 Mack heavy-duty S-wrench (Williams)

An added note: the 83A wrench's smaller jaw, marked 5/8 SAE, is cracked.  The matching-sized jaw on the heavier 83 wrench is not cracked. Was the 83 developed by Williams in response to customer complaints about the 83A?[/list]

I, equally ignorant, had no idea that there was a monkey wrench. I didn't find out about the S wrenches until last year when I bought the 79S on Ebay. I've used the quote before. We get so dumb so soon and smart so late. I'm trying to get some tool lists, Wrenchmench, I'll let you know.

Thanks, Johnsironsanctuary.  I look forward to seeing a Mack Tool List. Mack is an interesting company.  At one time, there was an old Mack agency in the area here. They had one of the first Mack vehicles, a fairly small ancient truck from around 1914.  One of their competitors in the truck was Pierce Arrow. "The only constant in the universe is change" seems true enough.

Wrenchmench, if I remember, you are in Maryland. You live in the only state in the union with a Mack Bulldog parts yard. Marv & Jack Comer outside Baltimore. They recycle concrete and asphalt for a living.  The yard had over 50 Mack AC and AB parts trucks when I visited in '88. They also restore them as well and have some beautiful examples.
