Standard Tool Co. Drill Index?????
« on: April 29, 2018, 05:10:58 PM »
Hello, I have never been able to figure this one out. It's heavy, fairly dense, some sort of plastic/acrylic. The company logo is pretty clear, but the holes aren't drilled. There are some imprints of number sizes near the indents that would be holes, but on the perimeter of the top are faintly raised fractional sizes. Pattern for a casting?? Paperweight??? I don't have a metal one to compare it to, but I am betting this is going to have the same measurements. 7-3/16" long x  2-1/2" wide. Thanks, Lou

About 15 years ago I had two Standard drill index bit holders. I sold them on eBay which I now regret. The first one was made of cast iron. The second was was cast aluminum. They were twins except for what they were made of. If I could only get a hold of Mr. Peabody and his WABAC machine.

I once had, and sold on eBay, a similar Standard Tool drill index made of brass. I've seen the cast iron version. I always thought my brass one was maybe a "foundry special" project. This seems like it might be a pattern? For sand casting?
Copies of Stanley planes sometimes turn up with brass beds and stock hardware, handles, and cutters. The plane experts seem to think they are "one off" foundry worker projects most likely using an original (possibly broken) bed for a pattern to make a replacement.

Looks like a casting pattern to me.

Hello, Guys . Thanks for the replies. Bill, they would do the casting, and then machine the holes? Thanks, Lou

No experience with casting, but I would imagine so, yeah.  It would be very hard to do a pattern in which those holes were properly sized as cast; it looks to me like they dimpled the pattern to mark where you would drill your holes, being careful to use the right size of drill/reamer for that position on the index.
