Another Craftsman Wrench
« on: February 27, 2019, 07:22:04 PM »
Hello, I started digging around in the Craftsman section, and I had forgotten about this one. I know that the style is common, but are there many Craftsman versions? Thanks, Lou

I wonder what's the vintage of that wrench?  Never seen a Cman version.  What size is it, Lou?

I have two sizes, didn't check, but I think they are 9 and 11 inches.

Just checked, the 9 inch has no hang hole and the 11 inch does have a hang hole.  The 11 inch has dull plating and the inside of the hole looks the same.  But I'm not willing to swear the hang hole is factory.

Hello, Coolford. Thanks!! I found a picture of one in a 1966 catalog, looks like no hang hole, but that could have been the picture of the 9" . Also the catalog lists the 2 wrenches as 9" 9 M 44490, and 11" as a 9 M 44491. They have it described as a General Duty Adjustable Wrench. Regards, Lou

Lou----I don't know what the official name of these types of wrenches would be, but I call them auto-type monkey wrenches.  I have a collection of them in sizes up to (I think) 18 inches.  My reason to call them auto-type is because it the wrench included in the auto wrench kits of years ago.----Charles

Here is a -V- 11” Craftsman auto wrench I sold on eBay at the beginning of the year. It went for $15.00 plus freight.

I have a 9 inch one with a hang hole that was drilled at some point. It has green paint with the -V- and part number 4449-9. I have always wondered who was the maker for Sears ? The Sears wrench is different than all my Diamond brand wrenches which most of my auto wrenches are. My Sears wrench has the green paint in the hand hole, so I have to assume it is a factory drilled hole. My wrench is tight with very little use.

Moore Drop Forge made 12” auto wrenches for Ford GPWs during WW2. After the war they went on to make the =V= tools for Craftsman. They were bought out by Easco around 1968 and the code changed to -V- but the tools were made in the same factory for quite some time. Here is the Moore auto wrench from my Jeep’s onboard toolset.
