Flea Market Find
« on: September 09, 2020, 05:38:50 PM »
Hello, I found this at the flea, looked interesting, no idea what they are. The ends are shaped like a hollow punch, 2 different sizes, 3/4 and 7/8. The threaded male ends fit the female hex end of the chrome plated shaft. They're pretty hefty at the threaded end (last photo).  I'm guessing there is more to this, but this was all I could find. Thanks, Lou

Looks like something for taking a sample core from some material.
VWs to D10s, I've fixed em.

I've seen from a distance a arborist taking a sample from a tree. That might be what they use?

I believe they are for taking a soil sample core.  I am pretty sure the ones I used in graduate school looked like the bottom two.  I will go check out a Forestry Suppliers catalog online or at work and see if the ones in there look like it.

Yes, that is what they are.  Go to the Forestry Suppliers website and put in Soil Sample Tube and a bunch will come up.

Some of the old cheese and butter samplers/testers have a similar form, but they are usually made of soldered, rolled, sheet tin.
