I have 2 at 10" and 1 at 8", but sorry I'm not willing to part with the 8"quite yet. I told myself I'd start selling when I hit 70, that's only 3 months away. I'm starting to have second thoughts about that decision.

I was thinking that I would be willing to trade an 8 inch for a 10 inch, so I checked my user pipe wrench drawer in the barn.  I have a 10 and a 14.  Now you guys have made me want to find a 12 inch.  I do not use mine very often, but they are very handy sometimes.

Addison B. Carll was issued patent 1,052,313 on February 4, 1913 for the Little Giant Pipe Wrench. The pictures below are 3 wood models of 3 sizes of the Little Giant Wrench. The tags are marked that the models were made by A. B. Carll and were received by G. H. Newton July 27, 1921, a second date o 8-1-21 also appears on the tags. The model wrenches are 10 inches, 14 inches and 18 inches long. The 10 and 18 inch models have brass adjusting nuts with a working threaded dynamic jaw. The 14 inch model has a wood adjusting nut that will slide on the smooth shaft of the dynamic jaw. Interesting pieces that have survived over 100 years.  The Little Giant Pipe Wenches were made by Greenfield Tap and Die Corp, Greenfield Mass. Little Giant Pipe Wrenches were offered in 8, 10, 14, 18, & 24 inch sizes.
The question is did Addison Carll use these wood models to sell his patented design to Greenfield Tap and Die or was he an employee? The patent list his home as being in Boothwyn, PA.


A quick search on DATAMP reveals that Addison Carll was issued 6 other patents, 4 patents are for wrenches one of which is the Carll adjustable nut and pipe wrench that resembles a crescent style wrench with a reversible jaw. The additional 2 patents are for brace bit items. Location on these additional patents are listed as New York, NY, Jersey City, NJ and Boothwyn, PA. I am guessing that Addison Carll had arrangements with Greenfield Tap and Die to manufacture the Little Giant Pipe Wrench.

It was age, as far as wrenches go I am probably closer to 700 than I am to 70.
