I've never been convinced that any wartime date code theory is valid. I've seen way too many tools that are chrome plated supposedly made during the wartime chrome restrictions. Those codes could be as simple as indicating which of over 20 wartime Plomb facilities produced that particular tool. AA does cover the prewar date code system very well.
