My Dad has worked for many motoracing teams over the years and back in 1978 he was in the USA for a race.
Hey Loony, tell us a bit about yourself. Where is home? What kind of racing was your Dad in? What kind of tools are you interested in?
All of the chisels that I found in my pdf collection were numbered 42xxx, but my newest was 1972. I am sure that someone will come along with a '78.

Got a bit more time now, We both live in the UK, basically My dad worked for mclaren back in the 70's and when the mechanics got the chance to buy unusual and quality tools they took it. The choice in the Uk was nothing like the stores in the US in those days. Simple things like witney punches and magnetic angle finders were not seen in the UK or were very expensive..
This chisel was bought from a Sears in Long Beach along with a few other bits he could afford. Over the years he has picked up a lot of tools and we find the Craftsman (as I share some of them) Brand very good value for money. I was a race mechanic for a while but found I needed a more stable Career, I still do my own wrenching on my Harley and our car and anything else really that breaks.
The chisel itself was very handy to pop the heads off rivets, if a car had a prang they would need to swap panels as quickly as possible and the chisel was the perfect size and shape to get in awkward areas.
They dont need the tool as much these days and it has been sharpended alot in its time and I think they just wanted a back up in case, I know one of the other guys wanted one of his own. After quite a lot of searching it turned into a mission to find a replacement and with you guys help I am one step closer.
So thanks to all that have helped. It is very much appreciated. I will post back with more news, in the meantime if anyone has a direct link to a store that sells the chisel I would be grateful.
Closeset one so far is by proto stanley.
