Old Mule Skinner's last wish

This weekend I had the honor to help fulfill the last wish of an old mule skinner. He wanted to be hauled from the church to the cemetery in a mule drawn wagon. I did not personally know the man but a friend of mine(Dewayne) asked me about a month ago if I would haul him. I asked when the service was scheduled and Dewayne said "I don't know, he aint dead yet!" The man was trying to get his arrangements lined out before he passed. Anyway, the man passed Thursday and the service was Saturday. His widow offered to let me out of hauling him because of the rain in the forcast but I told her I had been wet before! The rain held off until we were loading the mules back in the trailer after the service. These pictures are in front of the country church after they had loaded the casket and just before we left for the cemetery.

Thanks! I am very proud of how my mules performed, They stood for over an hour before and during the service and also at the service at the cemetery without fussing and fidgiting! The mules, Tess and Jasper, are 60 and 61 inches(15 hands) and were raised on my farm.

The funeral director was nervous about using the wagon to carry the casket (he had tried to talk the widow out of doing it but the family insisted) but there were no problems at all! I think everyone was pleased with the way it worked out.
