Thanks for all of the great info --- This is my first for wood scales, it is very touchy to make perfect and I move along very carefully.

I have done mild steel knife scales and they were somewhat more forgiving on the finishing part as its not as easy to mar the material and ruin the finish.

Don't want to hijack an excellent thread, but I LOVED your post, Scott G. Over the past year or two I have been to TONS of flea mkts, etc, and have picked up quite a few PH screwdrivers. Maybe I'll get the courage to try and restore one?
