At first glance, I thought that this was kinda like a wooden wood stove. On second thought, it would probably work OK. Neat piece of woodwork. Looks like it was display only.

Or maybe it just isn't that old.   To me, it looks like somebody made a machinist style vise using standard wood worker's leg vise screw and nut.  Really nice job, but it looks like it exceeds any real need.

Sold for asking price. Looked real nice, it did!

It does look nice, but I suspect that is all it does. There is a reason why woodworking vises have a big massive piece of wood behind the screw and not 2 whimpy trapazoid pieces ...

The 'anvil' surface is kinda silly too....

But it would make an *awesome* bookend....
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

I have to agree.
Wooden vises go way back and they are are strong and functional.
This one was built by someone who never saw a traditional English "chop'.
Reinventing the wheel works best if you have already seen a lot of good wheels and find some improvement you can incorporate.

Think of all the nuts you could crack with it!
