240 volvo station wagon help

I typed this once before, but I'm not sure it "went through."
    I have a 240 volvo station wagon.  The tailgate latch doesn't work so well anymore.  Sometimes I can open the tailgate, and sometimes I cannot.  I've tried the obvious, wd40 , white lithium, ect. 
     If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

there is a pin that slides back and forth when you lock it.

if the eyes the pin slides thru break it wont open  locked or unlocked.

you are starting to break the eyes.

take the inside cover off and look, it will all make sense.
