Advice needed repairing wooden spindle on bed post
« on: August 27, 2012, 08:36:36 AM »
My little girl broke the wooden spindle on her bed post.  It where a wooden spindle section is screwed down on larger one using a bolt in one end and threaded metal sleeve in the other end.   Well the metal threaded sleeve is busted and pulled out of the wood.  Now there's nothing for the bolt to tighten onto.   Any suggestions?

Thanks

It's difficult to understand the problem without pictures.
Is it possible to drill the spindle deeper, install the threaded sleeve deeper and use a longer bolt?
Drill a clean hole in the spindle, install a wood dowel and use a wood screw?

Top part of spindle has a dowel screw with machine thread sticking out
bottom spindle has a metal piece inside the wood like pic (DOWEL PINS TAPERED THREADED) -  This piece is busted.

Have you got all the sleeve out?  A new threaded sleeve is the answer, and one of the places that sells specialty furniture making hardware should have, or be able to get a replacement.  These come in a couple of varieties at least. One is hex shaped and essentially gets tapped in.  The other form has exterior threads to screw into the wood.

Wonder if durhams water putty would work.
Mix just a little put it in the hole then put the
other piece back in. The putty should works its
way up the sides. It turns rock hard.
