Wild goose chase and a rewarding lead.
« on: September 08, 2012, 08:19:42 PM »
A friend called me last night about a young lady with some old tools for sale. I should have known it would be a bust because they were in a bar when I was talking to her and she said she had to go because it was her turn in a pool game.
She said that I could see the tools if I came to her place between 7 and 8 Saturday morning.
I was on time, but no answer at the door. Called her cell and got her mother who said they shared the phone number, and I should wait till 9. I left and had some breakfast, then came back at 8 AM, same deal.
Then a guy drove up and said he was there to pick up her boyfriend. He had to call him to get him to come out. The boyfriend told me the girl was getting up and would be out soon, but she didn't, so after knocking two more times and calling her cell again, I left empty handed.

Next post is much better!

Disgruntled at the waste of time noted above- I followed a lead about 20 miles away that was well worth the trip. Sadly, nothing was for sale yet, but I was taken around and through 5 buildings of tools and Model T  and A stuff, tractor seats by the dozen, Maytag engines, some blacksmith stuff.
The guy is suffering from Parkinson's and needs to downsize his collection of 50 years, including a lot of stuff from his father. He wants to set up an auction later this year, but I don't think it will happen that soon.
I felt like American Pickers going through everything looking for things that I might want, unable to get him to commit on anything. He was not willing to let me take pictures today, but we have made a deal for me to return and shoot a bunch.
I've been wanted one of those Maytag engines for a long time, and I know I can get one from him, either running or not.

That would be torture, sounds so cool.
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

Persistance is the key, he'll give up some of his treasures sooner or later. Good luck!
My friends call me Bob. My wife calls me a lot worse.

I feel that I made an impression on him that I was not trying to cheat him or take advantage. We'll get together soon and see how it goes.
