more odds & ends Clamps

dug-up some old clamps..
feels like a treasure hunt every time I go through my tool boxes..
this time I checked my clamp box, must have ~2 dozen clamps, all sizes..

2ea. C.T. Co Cincinnati Tool Company Hargrave 498-A/B Clamps.
9" & 11" leg (opens to 6.5" & 8.5") Very Heavy Duty, just slide & lock..

checked Ebay, can't beleave what they are asking for regular C-clamps?..
don't look vintage or special...

Just checked our C-clamps on eBay... Prices all over the place, with some fairly recent clamps starting at higher bids than genuine vintage clamps.

Do you reckon they are decorative or built that way for strength.
They are purdy.

I suspect it is more pretty than strength. The tiny amount of metal removed isn't going to make them noticably lighter given how much metal there is, and a solid piece would be slightly stronger in any case.

However, the triangle design looks like a rivited girder , which one upon a time was new, interesting, and thought of as very strong....(Think of the old railroad bridges..)

Looks like the design was for lightening without compromizing the strength, like lightening holes..

Interesting "Quick" acting clamps.  On a side note, Does any one else react negatively to the parting out of catalogues! seems like vandalism for profit to me!! I certainly wouldn't buy or display any "rare" genuine catalogue pages.

I got another explanation.  Think of the savings in metal.  Over a few thousand of these clamps, those holes are going to add up to a bunch of metal for making more clamps.

Yeah, I do.  Not that anything I say will accomplish anything.  People have been cutting pictures out of books for a very long time.  I've seen hand tinted steel engravings that had been ripped out of rare books.  Frame 'em and hang 'em on the wall until the next interior decoration fad wants different colors in the parlor.  Then out they go, the books long lost.

This is going to continue until the books are considered worth more than their pictures.

They just rip a page out & sell it? noticed several "one page" on Ebay.
Guess they feel they get more $$$ selling 30 pages for $9.00 each, then a 30 page catalog??

Yep.  Nobody's going to buy that catalog for $180.   

LOL!  For a lot of people, 1962 was a way long time ago, maybe people were using stone tools...
