Homemade plow plane
« on: November 28, 2012, 09:48:29 PM »
This plow plane appears to be home made. The construction looks quite crude, but certain parts have a strong resemblance to a Stanley 45. The metal parts look like things that were just laying around. The four parts that slide on the posts have M-H markings which I believe are for Massey-Harris (my pics don't have high enough resolution to show them). I assume they are part of some piece of farm equipment. The skates are different though. They are much better made than the rest of the plane, and they have cutting spurs on them. I like how the maker made thumb screws by inserting tags of sheet metal in slot head screws.

Somebody really wanted a Stanley 45!  There's a lot of ingenuity here, and somebody put a lot of time in scrounging possible parts like Dr. Frankenstein.  Will it still work?

Boy, that shows a lot of determination and grit!  Hope it served its maker well.

That to me is much more interesting than a tool that only required money to buy.
