Am I really considering this......
« on: January 11, 2013, 09:32:36 PM »
I have a chance at a old crescent table saw. I only got a couple problems.

No space, my dad already hates the fact Ime taking up half the garge. Second it would be a tight on the wallet to purchase better yet get running. The last big problem is I have no idea how I get it home.

Well i am considering, any thoughts.

Thats a monster saw.

a great collector item, but I have no facts about how well they cut.

It's on a trailer maybe the owner could deliver it?

sounds like a project start, not an immediate available working tool.

A lot better to consider before you buy than after you buy. I've tried it both ways.

Is that a wrench hanging on the side? Is it marked?

That's an industrial grade table saw.  How big a blade will it swing?  Looks like a five horse motor, and I'll just about guarantee it originally ran on  a line-shaft system -- it was meant to.  No contractor table saw will begin to compete with what this will do.   This is what you find in a mill shop.

What a beauty!  If you can manage at all, this is THE SAW.

i'd say with its one piece extended cast base its very early electric motor setup.

Branson is correct but if it is 5 hp you better check that your elect panel will need a dedicated breaker/dual breakers, you will need a 40 amp 240VAC breaker and the motor will draw 22 amps under no load, locked rotor /startup will be significantly higher for a few seconds.  It is also possible that it is 3 phase and that is another ball of wax.

Don't get in over your head there are plenty of 110/120 VAC saws available at a good price and don't need any special attention. Of course if you want a learning project I think you just met a possible challenge. Good luck with that one --- it's kool but I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole, not even if it was free. JMHO -- If you really need a saw buy something that will run on existing elec available. If you want a long term project I think you found it. Old is Kool but "Function Rules" if you need to use it.

BTW I work with a guy who worked in a mill for ten years in the 60s/70s and he said that it probably used in a mill but it was a very small saw and he had never seen one that small actually in the mill he worked in northern CA. He said for normal everyday use and possible transportability to a job site it was pretty useless for a regular guy doing regular construction work. It's a fun project tho

Just curious how much are they asking for it --- ok if you don't want to reveal the price just curious
