If you think his job is bad, some poor schmuck had to count all those gear teeth to make sure they made the right number....

Great, now how about a pic of the lathe, that turned the casting?   Wonder if this was from a factory or a large ship driveline?   Electrical generating power plant?  To think that was all laid out with a slide rule and machinist square.

Nothing like that at the power plant i work at.  We burn coal and gears like that wouldn't last long in our enviroment.

From the very large gear ratio, I would suspect it is for a gas turbine set...
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.
