Need help with Mossberg socket set
« on: September 27, 2013, 12:32:35 PM »
I've been cleaning up all my junk and dug out this Mossberg set. I believe it's a #15 (not 15A) but the decal is in pretty bad shape. It's a newer set in a 10x 3 3/4 x 2" metal box.
It contains 7 square sockets 13/32, 15/32, 17/32, 19/32, 21/32, 23/32, 25/32. Which fit nicely in the second row.
There are 5 hex sockets 19/32, 1, 1 1/32, 1 5/32, 1 9/32, with room on the first row for about 4 more sockets.
There are no drive tools.
Can anyone tell me what this set should contain?

Doubt that its a #15 set. ebay item 310584620415 shows several Mossberg sets in an ad for sale including #15 sounds like you have more sockets.

Thanks for the auction link Jim. The set in the ad is a #15A Special Ford set. I don't know why it's listed as a #15. If you blow up the image I posted you'll see what appears to me as #15. The 5 of course is only partial but it's the only possible number.

Do you suppose the 15A is just the 15 in a steel box instead of a wood box?

Edit: No, the 15A looks is the same box then...hmmm

The picture of the 15A shows the oddball oval socket...

Thanks for posting Rusty. The 15A contains the 19/32 oval socket. It"s for three crank shaft bearing bolts
I'm beginning to believe that I have a #15 box that someone has filled with other Mossberg sockets. It's strange that all the square sockets fit nicely in the second row and there's room for about 9 sockets in the top row. Many more than in both the #15 and #15A sets.

Looking back ot your manifast, it is odd to have so many square sockets, none of the auto sets came with more than a couple, except the big giant has everything #14 and #45 sets. The non ford auto kit (10) doesn't have any square sockets at all...

But you have the oval socket...which goes with nothing else...hmm
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

I don't have the oval socket (in this box). Mossberg had a habit of changing the contents of their sets as time went by. I'm wondering if since #15 & #15A are so similar that in newer sets they changed the sockets.

The 1917 Mossberg catalog show 15A (wooden box) and a 15B (fibre case). I don't have a catalog that shows the metal box set. The 1927 catalog no longer lists a No. 15 set.

Not that the listing states the oval socket is "for three crank shaft bearing bolts" also the 17/32" and 19/322" sockets are tapered.

Thanks for the info Bus. I corrected my older post.

Does everyone agree that the label on the steel box says #15? I'll just fill it with the correct sockets and ratchet. I don't have the wrench or screwdriver.

Thanks to everyone for your help.
