My friend moved into an older house and found this in the attic. We have no idea what it is and its driving us nuts.  Can you identify?

The "cut-off" tool on the end of the screw is slanted, so it will be used to cut something off.
Bar stock? Blacksmith comes to mind, for wagon axles.

Is that a blade on the end or is it wooden?

I have not seen one before, but certainly was purposely made.    I am wishing for a few more photos of the back and bottom parts.

It looks like the screw is at the bottom of it's travel and does not reach the hole. I wonder if there isn't a sharp tool missing from the lower end of the screw? If it is for cutting mortises, then I don't know what the hole is for. A drop dead cool piece whatever it is used for.
