Well sometimes a girl just needs a place to kick it......:)

I am getting a new Grand Daughter.
She will be here next week.
  Uncharacteristically, the bed is going to get delivered this weekend.
Usually delivery of a baby's bed happens on the first week baby is among us, the extra pressure bearing down.
The first week or so is usually spent in  dresser drawer.

This time, I have been through a broken finger and ear infection and a horror show of an attack of once-in-every-7-year mites....... Screaming off into the night with a trillion fiery bites alight. ...............(I, no kidding, took a bath in Sargents Flea and Tick soap one night, and shot my own favorite ball cap with Raid, on purpose.)

    But the first coat of genuine Paddy O'deen, lemon flavor shellac, (kept cool in the dark all this time, and mixed just yesterday), is on. O'Deen in an old friend who helped relaunch the popularity of shellac, about 1 1/2 decades ago)
    Don't worry about the age of well-cared-for shellac.
I could hardly get it off the brush it wanted to set up so fast.  And this on a cloudy day, still moist air, from yesterdays rain.

A cross between Santa's sleigh, Captain Kid's ride, and a Stanley Excelsior pattern #9 1/2 block plane was the inspiration.

  Its all local black oak and sugar pine. The pine has just a little "blue" here and there. I love the blue stain this gets sometimes. Some people consider it a defect and dispose of it, but I consider it rare and beautiful.

Yup, It came out really nice, and someday it will also be a family heirloom for the next generation as well. :)

You forgot the 2 best things about shellac, it's non-toxic, and it's repairable. Perfect choice.

Very cute !  Looks a little German.   The sides remind me of the face  of a black forest coo coo clock.  Not to worry about "defects in lumber"  I search for them when buying lumber and place them in obvious view.  knots, bark inclusions, worm holes, mineral streaks, spaulting  love them all.

Scott, that little bed is one sweet bit of work.  Great detail, and overall design, utility and finish.  But, what can you possibly do to top it for the next grandchild?  Did you carve the date and intials in the bottom?

This is a great idea. You did a great job with it, I'm impressed. I am currently working on making a headboard for my bed, I can only hope that it turns out as good as your baby's bed. How long did it take? (So I know what I am up against)

Cant believe I missed this the first time it was posted, Very Nice !!! Not sure if that conveys the impression it made on me, but I stand in awe, sir! And yes, definitely will be a hierloom.
My brother made a toy chest for us for our sons first Christmas, and my wife was just making noises the other day about the floor space it takes up...  sorry, that one stays!
