In a dark corner of my collection I found four American ½ " drive sockets, bought many years ago. Probably Army surplus.

They are marked:

13/16 CRAFTSMAN + BE

SW-250 Snap-on 25/32 G MADE IN U.S.A.

40118 BLACKHAWK 4  MADE IN U.S.A. 9/16
U.S. PAT'S. 1927844 RE. 19.287

3/8 MASTER U.S.A. MR 12

The first three brands are known to me. But what about "MASTER" ?

Hello, Henri. I have sockets here stamped Wards Master, I believe a Montgomery Wards brand? Regards, Lou

Lou, thanks for the quick answer.

AA says: 'Montgomery Ward sold tools under the Master Quality brand. There was some variation in the markings for these brand,
with "Master Quality" sometimes marked as "Wards Master Quality" or simply "Wards Master".'

This socket is only marked 'MASTER MR 12  U.S.A. 3/8'.

Could be Montgomery Ward.

I like the C-man.

Why ?

Henri

Because it has a classic timeless look. However, the Snap-On and Blackhawk sockets sitting next to it do as well. I have some of all three brands just mentioned and all three are really nice looking designs.

Uncle Buck, understand what you mean; agree with it.
Thanks for the reply.

I also like the New Britain family early sockets.  And don't forget the Blackhawk arrowhead sockets.  They show some pride!

Yes, the story in AA behind the BE mark is clear: Made by New Britain,
and the production date for the underlined Craftsman logo is 1934-1944.
