 yup, with a roll of paper next to it and string hanging from above to tie it up.

and yes, every now and then you would catch the meat cutter leaning his fingers on the scale for a few more ounces.

Boy does that bring back memories. I always wanted to tag along to the butcher shop so i could get a raw hotdog from him to eat.

 Bill300d, you pushed the memory button about the hot dog,

  my 2 sisters and I would walk to town with my Mom, the butcher grew up in the same town that my Mom was from,
  when we went to the market, he also would give us each a raw hotdog and we would walk around eating the treat. (times were tough)
   that was the store that always  had wood saw dust on the floor by the butcher counter.
