Went to the Habitat Restore and found a unopened one gallon jug of EVAPO-RUST rust remover. $3.99 plus tax. I don't normally buy it, but at that price yada, yada, yada. I have been finding lots of other stuff there, but but my picture taker / posted doesn't live close by anymore and she works full time. I will have to have her help me learn how to post stuff on here.

I'm wondering how that stuff works compared to soaking the really crusty stuff in a 5 gallon bucket filled with vinegar (my current solution for the really crusty stuff.

I have been using white vinegar because it works good and it is cheap. I used some Evapo-Rust in the past and left some tools in it too long and they turned black. I will save today's find for special tools and keep using the vinegar my wife was nice enough to get for me. Right now I need to keep on reclaiming my garage. I have use of about half of it right now. I need to get another and bigger air compressor and a bead blast cabinet. Maybe some day a small metal lathe.

The black coating from a vinegar soak comes off easily by scrubbing it in water with a copper or stainless wire brush if you don't let it dry first.  When it is dry, it is a bugger to get off. I dry the wrenches and wipe them with mineral oil from the drug store. It dries in a few days.

Interesting, because the interweb says mineral oil is a non-drying oil (mostly, it's a very light distillation of petroleum, so similar to motor oil, which sure isn't a drying oil).

I dunno Bill, it is Walgreens store brand. Maybe it soaks in to the steel, but after a while it doesn't feel oily anymore.
