Silver and Deming's name is in every modern tool catalog. Silver & Deming drills are drills larger than 1/2" that have shanks that are turned down to a half inch to fit in most Jacobs chucks. This whatsit was made by Silver & Deming of Salem, Ohio. It is also marked "Coles Patent". It is a blacksmith's tool.  I bought it at an auction about 8 or 9 years ago. I had no idea what was.  I finally figured it out after a few years of moving it around in my barn. I'm going to let you folks work on it for a while before I tell you. I have since sold it.

Kind of hard to tell from the pictures but the 5 th shot resembles the jaws on an iromworker, a machine commonly found in steel fabricating shops used to shear and punch steel. They usually have a small notching or coping shear which looks a lot like picture number 5

Gumming is the step in making a saw blade where the individual teeth are shaped before sharpening the tooth.  Gumming is done ob both band and circular blades.

You got it Rusty. When it was setup, it was bolted or nailed to a tree stump that had a big notch cut in it for the handle to swing down into. The frame sticking out of the side was to hold the center of the round saw blank. That is adjustable for different diameters. In operation, the blank was lined up with the jaw of the die, one man pulled down on the handle and if it was a thin blade, he could punch it himself. If it was thicker, then the top of the die was caressed by a 12 or 20 pounder.
