Looks to be a journal scraper for babbitt  bearings.

That looks like a cotter pin puller / remover. I have a nice Vlchek one similar to this one.

I will pass this info on to him. I have now pulled up some pictures of cotter pin pullers and the shape is right on.. this one is just much larger than the ones I am finding pictures of. Must be for LARGE cotter pins!

Certainly looks like a cotter pin puller.  I have a Vlchek & several Craftsman ones- large and small.  They are in the 50's Mechanic's tool caralogs.

With two pointy ends?  The ones I've seen have a flat end for lifting the bent over prongs and a pointed end for pulling the cotter. 

It is a brick jointer with round and V sides.  It is listed in their catalog as No. 1570.  It should be aobut 11 inches long with 5/8 inch stock in the center.  It will finish joints from 1/16to 5/8 inch.  Cotter pin pullers are usually smaller and have a round end and a flat end, but do look similar to this tool.

That's exactly what I thought when I saw it.

they made a real tool for that? my dad always used my old bike kick stand to groove the mortar. Thanks now I know what a real one looks like.
