Although I know what it is, I though some of the younger crowd might not.  I had never seen this Walden item before, although I collect Walden.  The first picture is in its operating mode, the socket is 9/16" and there are two, so if you wear one out you can use the other side.  Inside is a screwdriver and it is held in the socket by a ball but can be moved up and down and turned.  Second picture shows the screwdriver removed.

Is it a valve adjuster ?

That is what it is, and as I mentioned first Walden I have seen.

interesting that it has both sizes built in, rather than a set of sockets  like snap on

Yes, both sides the same size.

I have had Snap-On, Proto and Plomb valve adjusters that used different size sockets depending on the lock nut size. On 235 Chevy engines I just used a 5/8 box end wrench and a screwdriver. Seemed to work better for me. Same with Slant six Chrysler and Early Ford sixes. Ford Y -blocks used two types of adjusters. Some models had jam nuts and some didn't. I was a engine mechanic for 32 years at my last job. I worked on modern engines. Growing up in the 1960's and 1970's I had old cars and prefer working working on old stuff. Never had a old car or truck that used a carb and points distributor fail to get me home. I do like Bendix / Eclipse brand electric fuel pumps tho.
