From my spouses grandfather. What is it?

Bill Houghton

You've got your spouse's grandfather's left hand?  Man, is he generous!

No idea what's in his hand, though.

I don't think it's a saw handle.

Berryb

If those cones screw up and down then I agree that it's a saw handle. If not, maybe a nutmeg grinder. Thanks

I think it's a saw handle.Should be threaded. You would screw/unscrew the handle, or, sleeve until the maximum amount of the loop is exposed, then slide the loop over the end of the crosscut saw blade.Tighten as needed. Yours resembles the Disston 222. Regards, Lou

I stand corrected. It is a saw handle. Thanks everyone!

coolford

Saw handles are hard to come by, lots of old crosscut saws out there without handles or with rotted handles.

I'll second the post from coolford, those handles are getting harder and harder to find, but as he says there are lots of saw around but the majority of them are 5 or 6 foot saws. I have 1 pair of real nice handles and 2 not so nice. I'm on the lookout for a 10 or 12 foot saw to mount them on.  I'm about 500 miles from the coast so the long saws were not very common this far inland but I sure I will eventually find one.

That's a conversation to put off until you're a little older...
